Serve

In our church, community, and beyond

Part of our Christian discipleship inspires us to share the love of God with our community. We are involved in a number of service organizations and outreach ministries to be the hands and feet of Christ to Blacksburg and the New River Valley. Here are just a few community projects we are involved with.

In Our Community:

Micah’s Backpack

The Micah’s Backpack Program provides weekend meals to over 300 at-risk children in 10 Blacksburg schools. We give quarterly monetary donations in support of this ministry and collect food donations throughout the year to restock their shelves. Volunteers from our church help pack backpacks with meals at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church. To volunteer go to micahsbackpack.org or contact Jean Brickey at jbrickey@vt.edu.

Interfaith Food Pantry

The Interfaith Food Pantry is a joint ministry of over 25 Blacksburg area churches. It is staffed entirely by volunteers. A group from our church serves on the first Tuesday of every month from 4 - 5:30pm. We support this ministry with monetary gifts and also hold food drives throughout the year to collect groceries to stock the pantry shelves. For more information visit https://newrivercommunityaction.org/IFP/ To volunteer contact Jean Brickey at jbrickey@vt.edu.

Craig Springs Camp and Retreat Center

As a church family, we have adopted two cabins at Craig Springs Camp and Retreat Center which we are working to renovate extensively. This will be a multi-year renovation that will need many hands! To volunteer contact Pastor Gary at blacksburgchristianpastor@gmail.com

Roanoke Rescue Mission

With the mission statement “helping hurting people in Jesus’ name,” the Rescue Mission of Roanoke is a comprehensive crisis intervention center for men, women, and children. We support this ministry in various ways. We hold an annual winter coat drive to provide warmth to those without; our youth visit the Mission several times a year to help prepare and serve supper to the residents; and our choir visits several times a year to lead evening worship. For more information visit https://rescuemission.net/. To volunteer, email J.B. at blacksburgchristianyouth@gmail.com.

Beyond Our Community:

Red Cross Blood Drives

We host spring, summer, and fall Red Cross Blood Drives annually. There is no greater gift than giving the gift of life!

Disciples Mission Fund

We participate heavily in global ministries through the Disciples Mission Fund, the common fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Disciples Mission Fund supports 72 ministries of wholeness reaching around the globe. Every day, Disciples answer the call to be a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. From combatting racism to ending human trafficking, from starting a church to sustaining a community – Disciples know that by sharing the work, we accomplish what, by God’s design, we cannot do alone. Week of Compassion

As the relief, refugee, and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),
Week of Compassion works with partners to alleviate suffering throughout the world. Our church family has invested heavily in Week of Compassion’s disaster response efforts and the rebuilding of homes and churches destroyed by recent tornadoes. For more information visit https://www.weekofcompassion.org/
